I have the Common Core standards nearly memorized and have been using them in my classrooms for years. They are a combination of the best of the best standards for teachers and do not prescribe what to teach they give guidelines as to what students should be able to do . like write a coherent essay and read something while understanding the context in which it is written. The most political and specific the standards get is in recommending that students read fundamental American documents like the constitution and study Shakespeare. This is NOT a subversive document. As a change leader I am all about eliminating standardized tests and actively promote parent opt outs, we have replaced AP courses with duel enrollment post secondary college options, and havent ever done grades. The one our school struggles with not me personally is the later start time. Even if teachers agree with the value of later start and not all of them do, despite the research it is extremely difficult to get past the historical 8:00 3:00 schedule. This is especially difficult for teachers who are parents and their own childrens school has a traditional schedule. We are currently in the process of having discussions about flexible options that both supports students while respecting teachers needs. It probably wont be an easy conversation, but it is one that needs to happen.
